Internship & Post-Northwestern Opportunities
Students in German have an unusually broad range of post Northwestern program choices (such as for example the English Teaching Assistantship in Austria below) that are often partially or completely funded. The department works closely with the Office of Fellowships to support students exploring Fulbrights, DAADs and other academic fellowships.
- English Teaching Assistants in Austria
For prospective American teachers in the field of German language. Graduating seniors may apply. However they must complete their undergraduate degrees before starting their teaching assistantship. (Application deadline: January 15)
- Fulbright US Student Program
This program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research, and/or teach English abroad.(Northwestern Application deadline: September 1)
- DAAD Scholarship Graduating Seniors
This program offers scholarships for students applying to MA programs in Germany. Students may apply to regular programs or a "international" programs which have English as the language of instruction. (Northwestern Application deadline: c. October 15) - Congress Bundestag Young Professionals Exchange Program
Upon arrival in Germany, CBYX participants spend 8 weeks studying German at a Carl Duisberg Centrum (CDC) language school in one of three locations: Cologne, Radolfzell, or Saarbrücken. They then relocate to their permanent placement location for the remainder of the program. There, they will immerse themselves in German daily life and culture through studying (Winter Semester) and (later) interning (Summer Semester) in their career field. (Application deadline: December 1) - International Parliamentary Scholarships (German Bundestag) This internship offers young people the opportunity to get to know the German parliamentary system and political decision-making processes and to gain practical experience of parliamentary work during a 15-week work placement with a Member of the Bundestag. (Application deadline: June 30)
- MA/MS Programs funded by Erasmus Mundus About 120 English language MA/MS programs cooperatively offered by at least two universities in different countries. Application dates are set by the program and students applying to the program may also request a scholarship by completing the applicable parts of the application. (Application deadline set by program: October-January)
- Deutsche Welle Journalism Internships
Deutsche Welle offers internships in radio journalism in Bonn or televeision journalism in Berlin. Participants spend up to 6 months working in a department and take on increasingly complex responsibilities. (Application deadline: 6-12 months prior to internship) - Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship
