Jan Cao Accepts Assistant Professor Position at East China Normal University in Shanghai

Professor Anna Parkinson wins Kaplan Center for the Humanities Fellowship for the 2021/22 academic year

It is with great pleasure we announce that Anna won a Kaplan Center for the Humanities Fellowship for the 2021/22 academic year. The project she submitted for the fellowship is based on the tail end of her work on Jewish Holocaust survivors and German-language authors in exile and their (non) relationship to the postwar German-language canon (Hans Keilson, H.G. Adler). Please join us in congratulating her on this great recognition of her outstanding work.

Christine Helmer Named Peter B. Ritzma Professor in the Humanities

Congratulations to Professor Christine Helmer on her appointment as the Peter B. Ritzma Chair in the Humanities. The Ritzma Chair was established in 1977 with a bequest from Peter B. Ritzma, a career educator who earned his masters degree in education from Northwestern in 1937. This honor is a fitting recognition of Professor Helmer's scholarly contributions to the field.

Mackenzie Gentz wins Circumnavigator travel grant

German Major Mackenzie Gentz (‘22) is the 2021 recipient of the Circumnavigator travel grant. She will be traveling to: Cuzco, Perú; Lisbon, Portugal; Forsthart, Bayern, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; and Osaka, Japan. Her project looks at English as a Second Language (ESL) programs with regard to the language background of the program's city, the relative centralization of the program's curriculum, and the degree of accent training each program involves. The overarching goal of this research is to be able to make US policy recommendations about how to improve the way we teach ESL in the United States.  Congratulations!
